Job Description

NBC Bay Area is looking for an experienced, versatile and innovative journalist who can report and tell compelling stories across television, streaming, digital and social platforms.

This is a true multiplatform reporting role for a journalist with a proven track record in both broadcast reporting and digital/social storytelling . We’re looking for someone who is equally comfortable reporting live from the scene of breaking news, independently shooting and producing a television story, creating and editing vertical video for social media, developing an explainer that makes a complicated topic easier to understand, or joining a newscast to provide insight into what people are talking about online.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned journalist and natural storyteller who understands that audiences consume news differently across platforms and knows how to adapt their reporting and storytelling accordingly. This person should be a social native with excellent editorial judgment, a strong and engaging on-camera presence and the ability to independently report, shoot, write, edit, produce and publish high-quality content quickly.

Responsibilities

• Report, shoot, write and edit general assignment, enterprise and breaking news stories for NBC Bay Area newscasts in an MMJ role as needed.
• Report and produce original journalism for NBC Bay Area's digital, streaming and social platforms.
• Develop, produce, shoot, edit and front social-first news briefs and short-form video content for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, leveraging mobile and field production tools to deliver high-quality, platform-native storytelling.
• Provide fast social-first coverage of breaking news, major local stories, community and sporting events, and other high-profile assignments by delivering in-the-moment reporting and digital updates from the field and newsroom.
• Develop compelling social explainer content that breaks down complex stories and issues, helping audiences understand what is happening and why it matters.
• Publish content directly to NBC Bay Area's social platforms, quickly tailoring storytelling, presentation, pacing, visuals and other elements to the audience and conventions of each platform rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
• Serve as a digital correspondent within newscasts, providing insight and context around stories, conversations, trends and topics gaining attention online.
• Collaborate with reporters, anchors, producers, photographers, editors and digital and social teams while also being capable of independently taking a story from idea to publication.
• Maintain NBC Bay Area's journalistic and editorial standards across all platforms, including during fast-moving breaking news situations.
• Experiment with emerging storytelling formats, tools and platform features as technology and audience habits evolve.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

Must submit a portfolio or reel demonstrating a proven body of work across both broadcast reporting and digital/social journalism. Submissions should include examples of traditional television reporting as well as original social-first content that the candidate has produced.

• Several years of professional journalism experience, with a demonstrated track record of reporting for broadcast television and producing original digital and social journalism.
• Strong on-camera reporting and presentation skills, with demonstrated experience reporting live and from the field.
• Demonstrated ability to independently report, shoot, write, edit, produce and present a television news story from start to finish
• Proven experience producing original social-first video content.
• Strong knowledge of Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, including the storytelling styles, audience expectations and best practices unique to each platform.
• Strong news judgment and knowledge of journalistic standards, ethics, sourcing and verification.
• Excellent writing skills and the ability to write effectively for broadcast, digital and social audiences.
• Experience shooting and editing video using mobile devices and professional editing tools.
• Ability to work quickly, accurately and independently under tight deadlines.

• Strong sense of visual storytelling and an understanding of what makes audiences stop, watch and engage.
• Demonstrated ability to identify stories and angles that resonate with local audiences and bring a distinctly Bay Area perspective to broader conversations.
• Curious and comfortable experimenting with new formats and approaches to storytelling.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple stories, platforms and deadlines.
• Comfortable operating in a fast-moving newsroom where priorities can change quickly.
• Knowledge of the San Francisco Bay Area and the issues, communities and stories that matter to its audiences is strongly preferred.

Additional Requirements

• Must be willing to work in the San Francisco Bay Area.
• Must be willing and able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, as news coverage requires.
• Must be available to respond to breaking news and major events as needed.
• Must have a valid driver's license and be willing and able to travel throughout the Bay Area for assignments.
• Required On-Site : This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Salary range: $93,000 - $150,000
