osition Summary

Valley Forge Military College seeks a dependable, service-oriented Facilities Maintenance Technician to help maintain safe, functional, and professional campus buildings and grounds. This hands-on generalist performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and finish work across occupied academic, administrative, residential, athletic, and support spaces. The technician works independently on routine assignments, coordinates with campus stakeholders, and recognizes when work must be escalated to a licensed trade professional or outside contractor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Inspect campus facilities; identify deficiencies, safety concerns, water intrusion, equipment issues, and needed repairs; document and prioritize work orders.
• Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and repairs within training and legal limits, including switches, receptacles, lighting, ballasts/drivers, fixtures, and related components; use lockout/tagout and refer permit- or license-required work to qualified electricians.
• Perform carpentry and finish work, including doors, locks and hardware, cabinetry, shelving, trim, framing, drywall repair, patching, painting, caulking, flooring transitions, and ceiling tile replacement.
• Monitor and support HVAC systems through filter and belt changes, thermostat checks, basic diagnostics, condensate maintenance, seasonal inspections, and vendor coordination; perform refrigerant work only when properly EPA-certified and authorized.
• Complete masonry and building-envelope repairs such as minor concrete and mortar patching, brick/block repairs, joint sealing, step and walkway repairs, and related weatherproofing within demonstrated competency.
• Perform minor plumbing and mechanical repairs, including faucets, flush valves, drains, traps, fixtures, pumps, and other common building components.
• Carry out preventive maintenance schedules and maintain accurate work-order notes, inspection records, parts usage, equipment history, and vendor follow-up.
• Set up and support campus events; move furniture, equipment, and supplies.
• Maintain tools, shop areas, materials, and inventory in an orderly and safe condition; obtain quotes or parts information when requested.
• Participate in an on-call or emergency-response status when assigned and respond to urgent facility conditions.
• Perform other related facilities duties consistent with the position and operational needs of the College.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; vocational, technical, apprenticeship, or military trade training is preferred.
• At least three years of progressively responsible building maintenance, construction, institutional facilities, or closely related experience; five years is preferred for placement near the top of the range.
• Demonstrated working knowledge in several of the following: electrical, carpentry, HVAC, finish work, masonry, plumbing, painting, or general mechanical maintenance.
• Ability to diagnose problems, read basic plans/manuals, estimate materials, use hand and power tools safely, and complete work with limited supervision.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; ability to operate College vehicles and equipment as authorized.
• Ability to use email, mobile devices, and a computerized maintenance management or work-order system.
• Ability to pass job-related background checks and other screening required for work in a college and residential campus environment.
